We Shall Overcome

Scram Graham, Phone Bank to Maine, and NY Voting Updates

Actions for Week of August 30, 2020

****SAVE THE DATE TO CHAT WITH LIZ KRUEGER*****
Thursday, September 10, 2020
7:30 PM  9:00 PM

We’re facing another vote by mail election, budget justice is still flagging, and the police continue to run riot.  Join us to ask State Senator Liz Krueger how to ensure a smoothly run election, end qualified immunity, and transfer funding from police to ordinary New Yorkers who need help.

SCRAM GRAHAM!

The polls show the South Carolina Senate race is neck and neck.  With our help, Jaime Harrison can win and kick Trump toady Lindsay Graham to the curb.

Sound good?  Contact Samantha, who is an organizer in South Carolina, and tell her you want to phone bank or text bank to send Jaime to the Senate, while Lindsay goes home.

BLACK LIVES MATTER

The horrific shooting, and near murder, of Jacob Blake shows us once again why the police must be defunded and completely transformed.  If you can, please donate to local organizations working hard to help (at the link above).

If you want to help protestors in Kenosha with bail, tickets, and legal help, donate to the Milwaukee Freedom Fund

All this week

This week, we're joining with Empire State Indivisible and other local Indivisible chapters to phone bank for Sara Gideon (who has a good chance to send Susan Colins packing).  Sign up at the link on Eventbrite to join us.

If you need to know how phone banking works, watch this video. Your phone number will not show on the calls.

MORE VOTING UPDATES!

Gov. Cuomo has issued several new executive orders

  • allowing coronavirus to qualify as an excuse all elections in November (including those not run by the BOE)

  • requiring that every BOE inform potential voters about voting deadlines and how to ask for an absentee ballot

  • instructing the BOE to redesign the envelope so it’s less confusing, and easier to tell where to sign

  • calling for the county BOEs to speed up the ballot counting process

  • asking the BOE to advise of staffing needs and any shortages

By the way, you can help with the shortages by signing up to be a poll worker (you’ll get paid too).

CENSUS

If you haven’t filled out your census yet, do it now. There are millions of dollars, and Congressional seats, at stake. It only takes a few minutes and you can do it online.

What was there?

I used to play a game: what was there, trying to capture the usually ever-changing restaurants, stores, buildings’ and landscape that is usually New York City. This is a bit different. It will show you what historical events, people, and buildings were part of the city in the last century or so.  Or, try looking around the state, country, or other parts of the world. It’s like having your own TARDIS (time machine).
