Actions for Week of May 31

Insist on racial justice, get the legislature back to work, demand a green COVID recovery, and sad news

RECBECCA SEAWRIGHT UPDATE

(Thanks to Kim Moscaritolo for the info)

Rebecca Seawright intends to petition to get on the ballot on an independent line.  She thinks the governor will allow petitioning after Independence Day, but is not sure what the signature threshold will be. It may be lowered. Kim said she’ll let me know once she has more details.

INSIST ON A GREEN COIVID RECOVERY

As part of our economic recovery, New York must create thousands of good, green jobs by funding renewable energy, energy efficiency, and resilient energy projects to transition away from fossil fuels. We must build resilient disaster preparedness and response infrastructure, and understand that the climate crisis multiplies the risks of our current pandemic. Sign NY Renews’ petition at the link.

DEMAND RACIAL JUSTICE

Liberty and justice for all. We all recited it dutifully as kids, but the truth is that it doesn’t always work that way, especially if you are brown or black. Minorities are more likely to be harassed, arrested, or murdered by police than white people.

If you’d like to be part of the solution, rather than the problem, but can’t go protest in person, here are some other ways to help. There are also links to educate yourself to better understand what’s going on and why.
Or, watch this video from Chris Cuomo.

Also, in case you missed it (either on Twitter or in general), here’s how a real president responds to brutality.

REPEAL 50A

Section 50A of the Civil Rights Law protects records of police abuse and misconduct.  Call Liz Krueger (our State Senator) and tell her we want the legislature to pass S1830A, which would repeal this rule and require the state to keep records of arrests, the race of those arrested, and whether those arrested were brutalized by police.
